300 homeless out on streets as Seattle shelters forced to close

Hundreds of homeless throughout Seattle savored their last night with a warm bed and dry ground Sunday night. One of the largest groups that houses them says it reached the end of the road, and what's next is pretty bleak.

Fifteen shelters across Seattle closed Monday as the SHARE Housing group ran out of money to keep them open.

"There's a sort of fear factor," said Jarvis Capucion, a member of SHARE's board of directors. "We're all concerned about our health and safety. People die outside."

More than 300 people will now be forced to sleep outside, on the streets of Seattle. SHARE says more than $70,000 in funding from the city and FEMA has dried up, and they have no choice but to close all of their indoor shelters throughout the city.

For homeless people Anna Hammitt and her husband Marcus, who just moved to Seattle a month ago, it means living in a tent on the streets.

"There is a little bit of concern there," Anna Hammitt said. "We have our friends. We're sticking together and we're going to do this."

For now, she can stick to her husband, and hold out hope that perhaps a benefactor will come forward and keep the lights on and the doors open some point soon.

"It's so quiet and real peaceful," she said of the shelter. "There's no drama and nothing to be afraid. Being here is a real safe haven for all of us."

SHARE is hosting what it calls a "sleepout" Monday night at 7 p.m. at their headquarters with the goal of showing the city what it will mean to have so many people with nowhere to sleep.

The event also coincides with World Homeless Action day.
